Berlin gives you everything within a few S-Bahn stops: grand architecture, raw industrial walls, lakes, forests and some of the best golden-hour light in Europe. These are the spots I return to for couples, portraits, families and wedding portraits — with the best time to go and what to watch out for.
Classic & architectural
1. Museum Island (Museumsinsel)
Colonnades, bridges and the Spree in one place. The colonnade in front of the Alte Nationalgalerie gives soft, even light and a timeless look. Best time: early morning, before the tourist crowds.
2. Gendarmenmarkt
Arguably Berlin's most elegant square, framed by two matching domed churches and the Konzerthaus. Great for weddings and classic couple portraits. Best time: sunrise or a weekday morning.
3. Brandenburg Gate at blue hour
Iconic, but busy. Go at blue hour or just after sunrise for clean frames with the gate lit up. Keep it short and have a plan for the shot.
4. Oberbaumbrücke
Red-brick arches between Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, with the U-Bahn crossing overhead. Works for fashion, couples and moody portraits. Best time: late afternoon, when the arches glow.
Green & natural
5. Tiergarten
Huge, central and endlessly varied: lakes, bridges, meadows and the Rousseau Island area. The go-to for family sessions. Best time: golden hour.
6. Tempelhofer Feld
A former airport runway with an open sky in every direction. Perfect for sunset silhouettes, kites and bikes. Note that commercial shoots may require permission from the park operator.
7. Park am Gleisdreieck
Modern landscape design, old rail tracks and urban views. Great for relaxed couple and branding shoots.
8. Viktoriapark
A waterfall, a hill with views across the city and a neighbourhood feel in Kreuzberg. Lovely for families and engagements.
9. Schlachtensee & Grunewald
Forest paths and lake shores in the southwest. Feels far away from the city, perfect for natural-light portraits and after-ceremony wedding photos. Best time: late afternoon in summer.
10. Britzer Garten
Flower beds that change with the seasons — tulips in spring, dahlias late summer. Popular for maternity and family shoots (entry fee applies).

11. East Side Gallery
The longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall, covered in murals. Colourful, but busy — go early and pick sections away from the most famous paintings.
12. RAW-Gelände
Graffiti, rust and old railway workshops in Friedrichshain. Ideal for fashion, music and streetwear shoots.
13. Kreuzberg courtyards & Landwehrkanal
Canal-side cafés, tree-lined banks and old Berlin courtyards (Hinterhöfe). Perfect for a relaxed, lived-in city look.
14. Holzmarkt
A creative village on the Spree with wooden structures, lights and a riverside setting. Great for evening shoots.
Day trip
15. Potsdam – Sanssouci Park
Palaces, terraced vineyards and formal gardens about 40 minutes from central Berlin — a favourite for wedding portraits. Check the rules for commercial photography in the palace gardens before booking.
Permits: what you need to know
Private photos in public spaces are generally fine. Paid or commercial shoots can be different: some parks, palace gardens and landmark areas have their own rules or require permission, especially if you bring lighting, props or a larger crew. A professional photographer should know the current rules for each spot — ask before you book.
Timing tips from behind the camera
- Golden hour — the hour after sunrise and before sunset — gives the softest, most flattering light.
- In summer, sunset in Berlin can be after 9 pm; in winter it's around 4 pm. Plan accordingly.
- Weekday mornings are the quietest for landmark locations.
- Have a rain plan: colonnades, U-Bahn stations and covered courtyards look great in grey weather.
